Individualizing the BSIT: The BSIT program is more flexible than traditional computer-related disciplines. In addition to your core courses and any unrestricted electives you take, our program requires that you take five IT-approved electives. You should think about how you want to use this opportunity. If, for example, you want to go into a specific kind of business, you could arrange to take courses that would give you some background, putting you ahead of other graduates. Perhaps you'd like to specialize in a specific area of IT - information security, for example; we have elective courses that will enable you to do that. Or maybe you'd just like to get an even broader or in-depth exposure to IT. The key point is that we do not decide what you should take for these electives. Using them in the way most beneficial to your career plans is your responsibility. Your advisor and department faculty members will be glad to offer advice, but you're the one who makes the decision.
The IT Senior Project: This is a one-semester course, during which you complete some project, usually for an outside firm or agency. The purpose is threefold: (1) to give you a good dose of real world IT, (2) to show you have mastered the skills needed to be an asset to your future employer, including critical thinking and communications skills, and (3) to add real world experience to your resume, letting you stand out from other graduates. It is your responsibility to investigate and find a project opportunity, which could also be an internship. One source: we post project and internship opportunities of on our department web site on BlackboardTM.
An important note: A letter of intent, signed by you and a faculty member, is required before you may register for the IT Senior Project. Further, a Senior Project Contract must be approved by the department by the end of the first week of the semester.
