• Involved since 2005 with colleagues at Said Business School, Oxford University, in organizing and delivering small international conferences on scenarios theory and method ("Oxford Futures Forums"). Co-edited book on scenarios and turbulence published in August 2008 with Earthscan Publishers, London.

How long I've been teaching
I began teaching in the early 1980s at Oregon State University. I adjuncted while I was a doctoral student in Philadelphia during the 1980s. I have been a full-time academic in management since gaining my Ph.D. in 1988.

What are some of the signature assignments you have given your students?
Student teams in International Management (MAN4600) develop a foreign entry strategy for a multinational company assigned to them.

The accomplishment I am most proud of is...
... directing the Environmental Policy & Management Research Center at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Also, directing the large Ph.D. program in Management at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

The role of a professor is to facilitate students' learning. Students learn by actively participating in and contributing to a learning community in the classroom - and outside the classroom when they work collaboratively or individually on projects. Active participation in a learning community helps a student to link management concepts and theories with practical applications in organizations.

Dr. John Selsky (Associate Professor in Management and Director of Lakeland's Division of Business) has a broad set of research interests that he examines with colleagues in England, Australia and New Zealand as well as here in the U.S. In recent years he has researched these questions and published in the following areas: (a) how do companies remain agile and resilient in the face of rapid and disruptive change in their competitive and global environments? Can companies use scenario planning to improve their strategic success? (b) why do companies form partnerships with government bodies and nonprofit organizations to address social issues such as education or environmental degradation? What challenges do they face, and what makes such partnerships successful? (c) What are the conditions for success for multi-institutional research teams in the biotechnology field? How do such fields evolve and mature? Can an association of interested biotechnology organizations improve the competitive prospects for a region's strategic interests in biotechnology? (d) how can various kinds of organizations in a region help to manage their fresh water resources in a sustainable way when each organization has its own goals to fulfil and its own stakeholders to satisfy?
